LOCALIZATION ENGINEERING / TWO CASE STUDIES

JRPG Machine Translation

Text has to survive the machine.

An interactive exhibit about two Japan-only RPG localization projects. Xenosaga I+II turns variable-length English insertion into a bytecode-relocation problem. Phantasy Star Nova turns corpus completion into a container-reconstruction problem.

XENOSAGA I+II DS

The branch that moved.

29,461 translatable EVC records, 1,286 identified choice options and 1,304 relocated absolute branch targets. The opening YES route in an earlier build still pointed to 0x0D57 after English text moved the event layout. RC1 relocates it to 0x0E3A.

Status: v0.1 RC1 · PUBLIC QA / ROUGH ENGLISH. No complete human playthrough or zero-Japanese-everywhere claim.

PHANTASY STAR NOVA

The translation worked. The package did not.

The public foundation began at 17,189 enabled/nonempty English records out of 25,318 repository records, or 67.89%. The independent completion closes the known audited enabled runtime corpus at 24,850 English records, with 24,850 / 24,850 compiling and zero compile failures.

COMPLETION STATUS

TRANSLATION CORPUS: 100% COMPLETE

24,850 / 24,850 audited enabled runtime records translated.

This percentage refers specifically and exclusively to the audited enabled runtime translation corpus.

It does not refer to percentage of the game manually playthrough-tested, runtime QA coverage, graphics containing embedded text, or release/distribution status. These are separate completion dimensions.

TRANSLATION CORPUS = 100% COMPLETE
FULL HUMAN PLAYTHROUGH QA = NOT YET COMPLETE
There is no contradiction between those two statements.

A 606,683,059-byte overlay failed when used as a replacement for the 2,834,095,024-byte APP. The deterministic full merge preserves all 87,268 original APP paths and produces a 3,252,228,483-byte container.

Runtime: Vita3K boot PASS, English runtime PASS, glyph rendering PASS and update v1.05 PASS. About 20 minutes of early gameplay were tested; a full human playthrough is not claimed.

PRIOR ART / ATTRIBUTION

Completion does not erase prior work.

Vector Translations publicly released an earlier Xenosaga beta covering the first three chapters. Arks-Layer / PSNovaTranslations provided Nova’s public translation and technical foundation.

This exhibit does not claim a verified world-first for either release. Historical priority requires a separate prior-art audit.
